Gary Kirsten will hold discussions with ECB director of cricket Ashley Giles on Wednesday on the function of England head coach, Sky Sports News understands.
Kirsten is the top candidate to substitute Trevor Bayliss, who stepped down as head coach following the Ashes series.
Sky Sports News understands the interview procedure is continuing and that Giles can be meeting other hopefuls.
The 51-year-old has experience of worldwide coaching, having appreciated spells accountable for India and South Africa before in his career.
Giles has stated that his preference as head trainer, together with Chris Silverwood – that the current bowling coach – regarded another front-runner because of his experience at Essex.
The Alec Stewart of surrey is also connected with the role, as has England coach Graham Thorpe and Ireland coach Graham Ford.
Giles will hope to appoint a new head coach in time for Englands tour of New Zealand, that begins on November 1 with a global in Christchurch.
